  22. Not very, but with a qualifier.

  24. a) there is absoutely NO official Apple software that runs on
  25. Amigas and talks to Newton. It comes only as Windows or Mac software.
  26.  
  27. b) There's a shareware pk called "YAPI" (Yet Another Package Installer)
  28. which is installed on the Newton and lets it talk to any kind of
  29. computer's x-modem capable terminal program from which it can
  30. download Newton applications (known as self-installing ".pkg" files)
  31. The trick is getting YAPI on the Newton in the first place.

  33. c) The qualifier is as follows: you get the ShapeShifter 3.3 Mac
  34. emulator running on your Amiga. Then Your Amiga becomes a Mac and
  35. you can run the official Apple<>Newton software (or just about any
  36. other Mac software for that matter) so the two can talk to each
  37. other. This will require a proper cable. I'm [] this close to
  38. getting this working.  The author of the ShapeShifter emulator
  39. himself owns a Newton and tells me he has it working.

  41. d) email: you can get a "Newton Mail" account (which runs thru Apple's
  42. eWorld service) and a modem for the Newton and use that connection
  43. to get texts from the computer via email to the Newton. And probably
  44. .pkg files too since on eWorld are many Newton support areas with
  45. a lot of p/d software in them, so you can download them, unSIt the
  46. pkg files on the Mac (emulation), then log into eWorld (ask Apple
  47. for the Mac software), upload the .pkg files themselves to your
  48. own email account, log off, then log back in thru your NewtonMail
  49. account and receive them, where they'll self-install on the Newton.

  51. Note that the current Newton model sold is oNLY the model MP120
  52. but it's out there in two flavors:
  53.  
  54. 1) with the older 1.3 OS on it for about $399 (but in a box that
  55. also contains a "free" external Newton 24/96 FAXmodem)
  56.  
  57. 2) with the brand new much improved 2.0 OS on it for $550-$699
  58.  
  59. The 1.3 OS version 120 can be upgraded thru Apple to 2.0 OS for
  60. about $100 and they pay Fedex shipping charges both ways and provide
  61. a mailing box. (Call 1-800-SOS-APPLE for details).

  63. Any model of Newton earlier than the MP120 (the Original Msg Pad, the
  64. 100 and the 110) cannot be upgraded to 2.0 OS. Their ROMs are
  65. soldered, not socketed.

  67. There are quite a bunch of Amiga owners out here struggling to 
  68. interface these two beasts, some have been more successful
  69. than others. But it's doable to a high degree if you get the
  70. SS emulator.
